Behavior-Based Habit Formation System

A web system designed to support habit formation, grounded in scientific research on how habits develop and strengthen. For my bachelor’s research, I independently completed every stage, from theoretical research through system design, algorithms, development, testing, and deployment.

My contribution

The problem

Build a web system that supports habit formation and reinforcement, and recommends actions suited to the user’s habit status.

My solution

I studied research on habit formation and reinforcement, organizing the theoretical foundations into a systematic framework. To turn the research into a practical application, I defined the system requirements, core features, and behavioral logic.

I developed rule-based algorithms to evaluate habit status and select suitable recommendations based on completion behavior, difficulty, context stability, reminder dependence, and measures of automaticity.

Implementation

I designed the data model, architecture, and UI/UX, and developed the system with React, NestJS, TypeScript, Prisma, and PostgreSQL. I implemented authentication, habit management, reminders, completion records, progress analysis, and recommendations.

I ran automated tests and deployed the frontend and backend on Vercel and Railway. I delivered the system as a Progressive Web App (PWA) and carried out user testing and evaluation.
